Here are the trees being handed out this year :

Bur Oak: Iconic Wisconsin oak known for its beauty and hardiness. Prefers moist, well-drained soils; adapts well to alkaline soils, poor drainage, high clay content, very drought tolerant. Prefers full sun. Long-lived medium grower that upon maturity in optimum location can reach 70 feet in height with 70 foot spread. Fruit: Burr-like cap, acorn, bitter taste. Excellent source of food for a variety of wildlife.
Shagbark Hickory: This Wisconsin native is distinguished by its very shaggy bark. A slow grower, the Shagbark can grow to 70-80’ in height on good sites and spread 25-35 feet. Grows in part shade/part sun and full sun. Grows in upland, well drained sites, but is adaptable to many soil types. The fruit is a nut, used by several species of wildlife including squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, turkeys, grosbeaks, blue jays and nuthatches.
Swamp White Oak: Striking Wisconsin native. Good for moderate to wet soils, medium fertility, full to partial sun, medium grower, salt tolerant. Given space and time can grow to 75 feet tall and 60 feet wide. Very important food for wood ducks, turkeys, and blue jays. All oaks provide excellent wildlife benefits.

Come see us at The Milwaukee Art Museum: Art In Bloom

The WFB Garden Club has created beautiful entries since 2009, some of which have been featured in event brochures and have been awarded the People's Choice award. The Milwaukee Art Museum's Art-In-Bloom Exhibition invites clubs or florists to interpret a piece of artwork from the museum through a flower arrangement.

Butterfly Garden at Cahill Park

Picture
The Whitefish Bay Garden Club rescued a butterfly garden in Cahill Square. This garden, which was created many years ago, had been neglected and was threatened with being plowed under by the Village. The club redeveloped this garden to create an educational space for children and adults to appreciate and learn about butterfly gardens. We hope to inspire residents to create their own butterfly habitat at home. To learn more about plantings for a Butterfly Garden, click on our Resources tab.

Bird City Wisconsin

Picture
On March 22, 2012, the Village of Whitefish Bay was given the distinction of becoming a Bird City of Wisconsin member.  This is a testament to the care of our green spaces and natural conservation efforts that are part of the Village's smart growth plan.  The Whitefish Bay Garden Club led the effort to earn this distinction in conjunction with support from the Civic Foundation and Village Board.  During the annual Green Day in the Bay event sponsored by the Civic Foundation, there was an official presentation of the signs and flags to be accepted on behalf of the Village.

Fundraising Activities
