Annual WFBGC Summer Soiree
6:00 pm at a Garden Club member's home
Members and guests of the Whitefish Bay Garden Club, please join us at our third annual Summer Soiree where we gather to enjoy dinner and one another's company while we admire a member's garden. This is a great event to attend if you are interested in joining the Garden Club. Get to know other members and find out what the Garden Club is all about!
Please RSVP to www.wfbgardenclub@gmail.com.
Garden Club members Nancy Sturino and Marlene Jaglinski decided to apply for a grant from the National Garden Clubs, who partners with The AMES Companies (www.ames.com) to supply ergonomic tools for community landscaping projects around the US. We are thrilled to announce that we are a recipient of the grant funds and received a number of tools, including a cart for easy movement and storage. We are partnering with the Village of Whitefish Bay to store tools near our work sites, which will help make our community efforts that much more accessible for all who wish to participate and help beautify our village in a sustainable way. Thank you Nancy, Marlene, and all who made this grant possible.

On Saturday, January 26, 2013, the Whitefish Bay Garden Club hosted three tea tastings to enhance the appreciation of tea from both a horticultural and culinary perspective. The first tasting was paired with finger sandwiches; the afternoon event included delicious melt-in-your mouth cookies; and the evening tea featured steamed dumplings shared by couples.
The Whitefish Bay Garden Club also provided information on the customs affiliated with celebrating Chinese New Year. For families who had an interest in celebrating this holiday together(officially recognized on February 10th in 2013), the Garden Club provided information about restaurant options in the area.
The speaker Hong Ji was born in China. Her family has been in the tea business for years, and she brought a wealth of knowledge to participants from the greater Milwaukee area. She spoke about the history of tea and the health benefits affiliated with a variety of teas. If you are interested in attending similar functions in the future, please email wfbgardenclub@gmail.com.
In July 2013, several Garden Club members went to the Ball Seed Gardens in West Chicago and the Cantigny Park Gardens near Wheaton. Plus we stopped to purchase some of the lovely plants that we saw at both gardens at a beautiful garden center called The Planter's Palette in Winfield IL. This center features many of the varieties of plants that we saw at the Ball Seed Gardens.
Founded by George Ball over 100 years ago, the Ball Seed Garden is an experimental garden center where they test their seeds and combine them in various gardens to create ideas for their catalogs and the public. We saw many new varieties of traditional plants planted in linear box gardens, curvy designs, in vertical planters and hanging baskets. We were excited to bring back these ideas for our gardens and the Butterfly garden at Cahill. We especially liked the living wall of plants framing photos of Illinois scenes and the little fairy gardens.
We ate a delicious lunch at the Cantigny Park which is the former home of John McCormick on 500 acres of land. Featured in this park are a WWI Museum, the McCormick house, a golf course, a water garden, rose garden, and idea garden, prairie garden etc. The flowers were in full bloom on beautiful sunny July day.

The Milwaukee District Garden Clubs held its Annual Fall District Luncheon in October 2012 at the Anchorage Restaurant in Glendale. The Whitefish Bay Garden Club was invited to create floral arrangements for the tables. Garden Club members designed and created the arrangements in the Japanese Ikebana style.
Several members of the WFBGC took a road trip in August, 2012 to the
Rotary Gardens in Janesville, WI. We had a docent-led three hour tour of
the grounds. After a lovely lunch in Janesville we visited Klehm's Song
Sparrow Farm and nursery where a variety of perennial flowers are
developed and sold nationwide.
